The Town Beach area has always been a place for living for Yawuru people, other countrymen and those who came to visit and live in the town. The Bay has provided resources for thousands of years.  This is a place that marks the arrival and departures of people and goods, including the thousands indentured Aboriginal and Asian pearling workers, and other seafarers who lost their life at sea.  The Town Beach area is a place for Broome’s young people to understand the past, enjoy the present and create their future.

An interpretation team consisting of Nyamba Buru Yawuru and the Broome Historical Society was established to lead the development of creative and interactive interpretation elements at the Broome Town Beach Redevelopment. Guided by the interpretation team, MudMap Studio worked with Shire of Broome to deliver an interpretation trail and two community art projects to share the rich cultural and historical stories of the site.

One community project is a collaboration with Agunya and Juvenile Justice to create wooden carvings that now feature at the foreshore’s play area.  Another is a collaboration with Yawuru artist Terricita Corpos, Broome Senior High School and Broome Youth Advisory Council to facilitate a whole of community tile project. Over a series of workshops over 500 tiles have been created, and have now been installed into a long concrete wall at the foreshore.

MudMap Studio’s role has been to facilitate each of the community art projects, to coordinate the development of an overarching interpretation plan and to implement the interpretation items. MudMap Studio will also undertake the signage graphic design, produce construction drawings, oversee fabrication and installation of the interpretation and art items.
