As the town of Broome continues to grow, public art and interpretive elements at Town Beach celebrate the cultural history of Guwarri and Jilirrgun as traditional living areas and as places that link us to the rest of the world. Everyone and everything came through this area, mostly via the old tramway that linked Old Jetty to Chinatown.
The Town Beach area has always been a place for living for Yawuru people, other countrymen and those who came to visit and live in the town. The Bay has provided resources for thousands of years.
This is a place that marks the arrival and departures of people and goods, including the thousands indentured Aboriginal and Asian pearling workers, and other seafarers who lost their life at sea. The Town Beach area is a place for Broome’s young people to understand the past, enjoy the present and create their future.
MudMap Studio’s role has included historical and cultural research, mapping and facilitating workshops/engagement sessions. MudMap Studio then worked with artists and local community to deliver a number of interpretation and art items at this important place..
